Not yet finished : Mount & Blade: With Fire and Sword [Download]
First of all, the new things F&S does, it generally does well. I enjoyed the relaxed, "get-rich-quick" trading and the relatively more 'historical' setting. The gunpowder-era stuff is tons of fun, and the combat is even more interesting than before, between the lack of armor, the greater lethality of gunpowder weapons and the ability of troops to hole up in a wagon laager. The NPCs and their interactions are quite amusing, and the various story-line quests are entertaining and make interesting choices. However. Repeatedly, and especially when taking a story-line-quest-related character into my party, I had troops vanish. It was not apparently a random event, as saving beforehand and trying it repeatedly, with intervening actions, gave exactly the same result multiple times. Losing 30 men from a group of 70 hard-trained soldiers, especially now that towns don't supply an endless stream of raw recruits, is quite an annoying side-effect to following the story line. A similar sort of problem surfaces when trying to hire men from the commander of a town - while I can pay the hiring fee, the chosen men never actually join my party. I've tried repeatedly over several games, but to no effect. These two fairly profound glitches are enough to wreck the game for me. Luckily, the new "multiple-ladder" castle storming has taken effect in Warband as well, so I'm back to that with only a few twinges of regret for what might have been.
I gave the game a reluctant three stars. If it weren't for the troop troubles, I would have cheerfully given it five.
